Backup technologies that are meant for data recovery are sometimes used to create long-term storage. Long-term storage might have requirements and objectives other than data recovery and backup technologies might not be the best for them.
Long-term storage inevitably will involve data created with different technologies. Unless regularly tested, the data might not be readable, for example. Even where this is not a problem, there is the potential to save on costs in the context of constantly evolving technology.
Data snapshots can serve both backup and long-term storage requirements, according to Bob Fine, director of product marketing at Compellent.
