Cloud computing is using the Internet "cloud" resources to do your computing-related tasks. It is comparatively safe option because you will be depending on dedicated service provider who would be attending to data security, protection and even recovery if it becomes necessary. Or is it?
Last October, thousands of users of the Sidekick smartphone sustained a data outage, i.e. they lost the contacts, calendar entries, to-do lists, photos. Microsoft and T-Mobile announced later that the lost data is lost for ever. What this means is that even people who are expected to know better, the smartest and brightest, might think of getting away without working backups of data. In this case, not only the thousands of users but even the service provider had no backup to get the data back.
Copies of data are supposed to be in three places at all times: Primary, Secondary and Archive. When you deal with a cloud computing service, you would do well to get to know how they protect your data. Make it a point to discuss their data security practices.
