As the story of Drs Hannah and McGoldrick of Pound Lane, Downpatrick, illustrates, data recovery is not the only concern when you lose data. The doctors in this case had the personal medical records of 5,400 patients stored on two computer hard disk drives and several DVDs stolen over a Christmas break-in.
In this case, the data has been encrypted and the concerned Health and Social Care Board said that there is little likelihood that the files on the storage media could be accessed by the thieves.
Questions are, however, being raised about the delay in reconstructing important patient information. Though backups were reportedly made, these might have been stored in the same premises which had suffered from a damaging fire incident.
