A recent survey of small and medium businesses (SMBs) in UK revealed that 19 percent of respondents did not back up the data on their workstations, such as desktop PCs and laptops. The same survey also found that 72 percent of respondents felt confident about being able to recover their data if it is lost. In essence, it seems that a large number of UK firms are neglecting the chore of backing up theire business data probably because they feel that if a data loss happens, it can be tackled.
The fact is that even if data is recovered, data loss can cause serious damage. For example, in the above survey, 42 percent of respondents felt that they fear losing significant revenue and even customers if a data loss happens. Damage to company reputation and failure to meet compliance regulations were other expected consequences. Another issue is the cost of data recovery which can be quite high.
It is even being suggested that some kind of fine should be imposed on firms that fail to back up their data.
