In all the talk about logical partitions, file systems, corrupted data and lost clusters one tends to forget that data recovery involves certain physical tools. Platter exchangers, read write head removers and such tools are needed where the hard drive has suffered physical damage.
This story about HDRC's "universal" platter exchanger that was originally designed with a few models of hard drives in mind and found things going awry when drives with varied specifications had to be worked with is interesting for marketing people.
HDRC had to go back to the drawing board to design a new universal exchanger that can handle Seagate drives with metal inserts or small gaps below 5mm between the drive assembly and outer edge of the platter. The company reports having tested a prototype and hopes to have the new "universal" platter exchanger ready soon for the market.
